A letter from our founder

My name is Carl Capelo and I am the founder of Affordable, LLC. Being a general contractor for many years on my own projects, there were too many times that I experienced frustration and disappointment when working with other contractors. The root of the problem was the difficulty of finding contractors who possessed and valued the qualities of honesty and integrity. There were companies who gave crazy prices for jobs, excuses about why people did not show up when they were supposed to, and those who tried to charge more money than what we initially agreed on once the job was finished.

Then there was the integrity aspect. Many of the companies I worked with did not do the right thing when they thought no one was looking. Too many people tried to take short cuts in workmanship and even tried to use materials that were inferior to those agreed upon, hoping nobody would notice. Being a contractor myself, these things did not go unnoticed. Unfortunately though, to the consumer without experience in the field, these things do go unnoticed until a time down the road when there is a problem. At this point, the contractor is paid and does not even take your calls.

Affordable, LLC was founded partly because of the problems I experienced within the construction industry. My goal was to create a construction business that is different because it is honest with its customers all of the time — a company that will not sacrifice its reputation by trying to mislead customers in order to make a profit.

The mission of Affordable, LLC is to treat my customers in a manner in which I would want to be treated if I were in their shoes. I believe that all customers should be treated honestly and fairly. Not everyone is a construction professional and knows the proper way to get the job done, but they should not be taken advantage of because of that. You can rest assured that you are dealing with an honest and professional business whose priorities are customer satisfaction first and the bottom line second. After all, there is no bottom line without satisfied customers.

Sincerely,Carl CapeloFounder, Affordable, LLC

You can choose from several styles of shingles such as architectural shingles which are by far the most popular, as well as three tab shingles, and for those after a distinguished look there are also the designer style shingles.

We can install any brand you would like, but here are some popular roofing brands we use:

  • CertainTeed
  • GAF Elk

Components of a roofing system

It is a good idea to become familiar with the terminology in your roofing contract and in the installation process described below. These are the products commonly used in asphalt shingle roof installations.

Drip edge

Drip edge

This is an aluminum flashing that goes around the perimeter of the roof. It is available in the three colors pictured as well as copper.

Ice & water shield

Ice & water shield

This is a rubberized roll of underlayment that adheres to the roof decking.

It is three feet in height and is designed to extend over the soffit which is typically about one foot wide. The remaining two feet extend beyond the exterior wall of the home. Its purpose is to prevent water intrusion in the event of an ice dam. An ice dam occurs when ice builds up over your soffit causing a dam when the snow from your roof melts. It melts due to heat escaping through the roof from the inside of your home and can back up under your shingles once it reaches the ice dam. If this happens the water will not penetrate the ice and water shield.

Felt paper

Felt paper

Felt paper is another roll of underlayment that is an asphalt covered paper. This covers the balance of the roof decking not already covered by ice and water shield.

Starter shingles

Starter shingles

Starter shingles are applied over the drip edge around the perimeter of the roof. They provide for clean lines and a surface for the shingles to adhere to.

Pipe flashing

Pipe flashing

Used to seal around pipes protruding through the roof surface.

Lead flashing

Lead flashing

Used mostly on chimneys to prevent water intrusion. Mortar is ground out of the chimney to allow the placement of lead inside the joint and it is then resealed.

Step flashing

Step flashing

Used to prevent water intrusion where shingles meet with side walls.

Ridge vent

A common form of roof top ventilation.

Hip & ridge shingles

Hip & ridge shingles

The last shingles applied. These are different from roof shingles in shape and size. They are used on any roof peaks.

Roof shingles

The most common shingles used today is the architectural shingle. The older style three-tab are also available, but have a shorter warranty. The designer style shingles are a premium product and come in several different styles beyond the one shown.

Diagram of attic airflow through soffit vents and a ridge vent

A bit about roof ventilation

I want to briefly talk about roof ventilation which I feel is sometimes overlooked. Proper ventilation is required in order for shingle manufacturers to honor their warranty. Inadequate ventilation can cause premature failure of shingles and mold issues in your attic. As you can see in the diagram, the hot air in your attic is lighter than the relatively cooler air outside. This allows natural airflow out of the top of the roof via either a ridge vent, exhaust vent, or gable vents. Ventilation at the soffits aid in this flow by replacing the hot air that needs to escape. The soffit vents and ridge vent are dependent on each other and proper airflow cannot be achieved without them both. If your home does not already have soffit ventilation it should be installed or in most instances vented drip edge can be used to achieve the same air flow characteristics.

The Process

Seven steps, start to finish.

Don’t be in the dark about exactly what will go on during the installation of your new roof. These are the procedures and minimum product application practices we perform on all of our jobs.

Most roof installations take one day from start to finish. We provide all the materials agreed upon in the contract and dispose of all the construction debris.

Contact us for a free estimate
  1. 1

    Delivery & setup

On the morning that we begin your installation we will have the materials and dumpster delivered. On some occasions this may be done the day before depending on vendor scheduling constraints. Dumpsters are placed in a location approved by you and we always place planks under its wheels so we do not mark your driveway. The roofing materials are either placed in a location approved by you or they are hoisted onto the roof with a crane.

  2. 2

    Tarps & tear-off

Before we begin stripping your old shingles we will cover your home with tarps so falling shingles do not hit your home. The tarps are typically extended to cover the bushes around your home when possible. We then strip off the old shingles and underlayments down to the wood roof decking.

  3. 3

    Deck inspection

We now inspect the roof decking to determine if any of the wood needs to be replaced due factors such as water or insect damage. We will bring any damage to your attention, advise you on the recommended course of action, and address the issue as you instruct us. If any loose roof decking is observed during this inspection it will be re-nailed. Roof flashing on chimneys and sidewalls will also be inspected and if determined to be in poor condition you will be advised.

  4. 4

    Underlayment & flashing

With a good base to work on we begin the installation process. This starts with installing new aluminum drip edge around the perimeter of your roof. The ice and water shield is then applied over the eaves of the home as well as on roof valleys, sidewalls, and roof openings such as skylights and vents. Next the felt paper is installed over the rest of the roof deck. Starter shingles are then nailed around the perimeter of the roof to provide clean lines. New flashings are installed around vent pipes and if needed, new lead flashing is installed around chimneys along with step flashing on sidewalls. Skylights would also be replaced if desired. Finally it is time to install your new roof shingles.

  5. 5

    Ridge vent & hip/ridge shingles

Once all of the roof shingles are installed all the way up to the peak of the roof it is time to install the ridge vent if one is being utilized. The last step in the installation is to install the hip and ridge shingles. These are utilized on all of the roof peaks on the home.

  6. 6

    Cleanup

With the installation all done the final important step is the cleanup. While the roof is being installed all of the old shingles are being loaded into the dumpster. With all of the shingles loaded we then rake up the smaller particles of roofing on the ground. To remove the nails we go around with a big magnet on wheels which pulls them off of the ground. Any dust is swept up and/ or removed with a blower.

Siding

Vinyl siding for a long-lasting, low-maintenance home.

Vinyl siding is the perfect choice for a long lasting low maintenance home exterior. It comes in many varieties that very closely resemble wood and a variety of colors to customize your home to suit you.

Most vinyl siding installations are accompanied with the installation of aluminum trim around windows and doors as well as over existing rake and fascia boards. This is done to cover any existing wood trim that may peel and become unsightly without maintenance. Aluminum trim provides for a clean look and the paint does not peel. Vinyl siding and aluminum trim free up your time and money that would normally be wasted having to paint a wood exterior every few years. Spend that time enjoying your home rather than working on it.

Components of a vinyl siding installation

House Wrap

House Wrap

This acts as a moisture barrier to prevent water from coming in contact with the wood sheathing of your exterior walls while still allowing the home to breathe.

Insulation Board

Insulation Board

This is used for a few reasons depending on the installation. Its inherent properties are that it provides a small amount of insulation value to the home and also acts as a vapor barrier.

It is also used as a means of smoothing the work surface, especially when going over existing siding, to provide a flatter surface to apply new vinyl siding to.

Standard Corner Trim

Standard Corner Trim

Corner trim comes in the standard 3″ wide in either a color to match the siding or a contrasting color.

Fluted Corner Trim

Fluted Corner Trim

Wider 6″ corners are also available with grooves called “flutes” for aesthetic appeal.

Aluminum Window Trim

Aluminum Window Trim

Aluminum trim is used around windows and doors. It comes in a variety of colors with white being the standard.

Aluminum Fascia Trim

Aluminum Fascia Trim

Also used over rake and fascia boards to cover wood trim for a maintenance free result (no peeling paint), although it could use periodic washing like anything else.

Soffit

Soffit

Vinyl soffit material is used to cover the underside of eaves. It comes vented with holes or solid. Non vented and beaded soffit is sometimes used on the ceilings of farmers porches.

Maintenance-free trim

Vinyl siding and aluminum trim free up your time and money that would normally be wasted having to paint a wood exterior every few years.

Removed or covered

Installation procedures and components can vary based on the age and existing siding on your home. Your old siding can be removed or in some cases we can go over it.

On average it takes about a week to install vinyl siding and aluminum trim from start to finish. We provide all the materials agreed upon in the contract and dispose of all the construction debris, leaving your home just as clean, but even prettier than it was before we started.

Windows

New windows that lower energy costs and look great.

Installing new windows is a great way to lower energy costs and improve the look of your home. Improved functionality is also a great reason to replace your windows since older windows may not operate smoothly or at all. Two of the main choices to make are to select wood or vinyl windows and whether to install replacement style or new construction style windows. The most cost effective among these four options is a vinyl replacement window.

Common terms to understand when window shopping

Window Sash

Window Sash

The window sash is the unit that slides open and closed. A double hung window has two moveable sashes (upper and lower) while a single hung window has one moveable sash (lower).

Double Hung Windows

Double Hung Windows

Windows with two moveable sashes and a horizontal divider.

Casement Windows

Casement Windows

Casement windows are those that use a crank handle to open and have no horizontal divider in the middle.

Sliding Windows

Sliding Windows

Have a similar look to casement windows since they have no horizontal divider. A cost effective way to get the look of casements without the added cost.

They slide open horizontally as opposed to vertically like a regular double hung window. Please note these are not simply double hung windows mounted sideways. The mechanism is different which is built specifically for it to slide horizontally.

New Construction Windows

New Construction Windows

New construction windows are a complete unit that come with a nailing flange that allows the window to be installed by nailing it into the plywood wall sheathing of the home from the outside.

This is what is normally used in current home builds.

Grids

Grids

Aesthetic dividers within the glass. Windows can be ordered with grids on both sashes or just one.

Replacement Windows

Replacement windows are installed in the existing framework of your existing windows. The old sashes are removed and a complete window assembly is installed in their place.

Low E Glass

A reflective coating on the glass that reflects heat waves off the glass and outward in the summer and reflects heat from the inside of the house back inward in the winter.

Argon Gas

This gas is used to fill the space between window panes. Its purpose is to increase the R-value of the window and offer increased sound deadening.

We can install any brand you would like, but here are some popular window brands we use:

  • Simonton Windows
  • Ply Gem Windows
  • Wincore Windows & Doors
  • Silver Line by Andersen
  • Harvey Building Products

Choosing a roofing company can be a chore. I received 3 quotes from 3 local companies, with a very wide price range. I settled on Carl at Affordable and I know i made the right choice. His price couldn't be beat, but the extra attention to detail is what I was most impressed with. Having had issues with ice dams and subsequent leaks this past winter, I wanted to make sure that that was addressed, and he went the extra mile to ensure I shouldn't have that problem again. Best price, completed in 1 day, top quality materials (timberline HD shingles in charcoal). This was a no brainer. Thank you!

I’m so glad I was recommended to Affordable LLC by a friend of mine. Carl and his crew came in bright and early and replaced my roof in one day. I have a big house and I am pleasantly surprised they were able to get this done in just one day. I didn’t think they would be able to pull it off, but they did. I’m the type of person who does his homework and research on everything, bit by bit. I leave no stone unturned. After careful review of all the companies who came to look at my roof, I decided to go with Affordable and boy, am I glad I did. Carl is simply the best. Friendly, courteous, and honest. His guys are hard workers and professionals at what they do. My roof looks gorgeous, the clean up afterwords was thorough, and I’m one happy customer. This is a job well done and I’d highly recommend Affordable to anyone. If you need a new roof, you owe it to yourself to call Carl and have him give you a quote. You won’t be sorry you did. Finally I’d like to say that I got seven quotes and Carl gave me the best price, by far. I’m so grateful!

We had an excellent experience and would highly recommend Affordable to everyone. Carl was outstanding. He was professional and knowledgeable He answered all my questions in a timely fashion kept me updated as to any time changes that we might occur during the project He came out multiple times to assist me by answering all of my questions. I never felt rushed or that he was trying to sell me a product that I did not request. I had my house sided and my gutters reinstalled as well as two doors put in His team showed up on time and worked efficiently. They cleaned up every single nail. There was not a single nail left on the ground. There wasn't a piece of siding left. His team went back-and-forth throughout all of my bushes to make sure that any scrap pieces were picked up. We could not be happier with a total transformation of our home In the future, if we have any further projectshis company is who we will use

I recently had my roof replaced by Affordable. The whole project from start to finish exceeded my expectations. The owner (Carl) provided me with an estimate and took the time to address any issues that I had. The crew completed the installation in one day and it was obvious they knew what they were doing. At the end of the day, the work area and yard were cleaned up and it was hard to know that they were ever there. Great experience, very satisfied and the roof looks great.

If anyone needs siding or gutters I would highly recommend contacting Carl at Affordable LLC. During the first meeting with Carl he said to my husband that he saved his last customer 10k. BELIEVE IT. If you want to save some money call for an estimate. I was very impressed with Carl’s crew. They stripped my house and garage and resided both in two days. Not only did they work their butts off they were highly skilled at installing siding. Just because it’s affordable does not mean sacrificing quality. My best decision was having my husband call for an estimate. Thank you to Carl and Affordable LLC for everything. Also, quick shoutout to the gutter installers they did a great job as well. I will not hesitate to hire Affordable in the future they will be our first call.

Working with Carl on my sister’s house placing new sidings, windows, window shutters and gutters has redeemed my unpleasant past experiences with contractors. Since the first moment we requested a quote from him he was very profesional, kind and respectful. Through the entire process we were always communicating about the project to make sure we were on the same page. He never made any unilateral decision without consulting with one of us. If you are looking to have peace of mind while your house project is getting done we highly reccomend Affordable, LLC. His company’s title encapsulate his values and work ethics as the owner of this company. We both look forward working with him in our next project. Thank you Carl and God bless Sincerely Gabby and Francisco.
